As a homeowner, one of the worst things to find is a cockroach. These bugs can multiply quickly, and they could be carrying diseases. To deal with this pest in an apt manner, you can take these steps:
Inspect Weatherstrips Underneath Entry Doors
After finding cockroaches in your home, it's important to immediately check the weatherstrips below your doors. If you notice that these are coming up or that they have large cracks on them, you need to replace them as quickly as possible. Otherwise, cockroaches may keep getting in through underneath your doors.
For a replacement, getting weatherstrips with an adhesive backing is ideal. These weatherstrips are simple to install. All you have to do is press them firmly below your doors. You also want to get ones made out of vinyl, as this material is weatherproof. No matter how hot or cold it gets, the weatherstrips will hold up to prevent bugs from getting into your home.
Set Out Homemade Baits
If you don't want to spend a lot of money when dealing with cockroaches, you can try making your own bait. First, go out to the pharmacy and get some boric acid. This acid is effective in killing cockroaches quickly. Put this acid into a bowl and mix in some white flour. The white flour helps attract the roaches to the bait.
After mixing the acid and flour for several minutes, sprinkle the solution underneath tables, refrigerators, furniture and near all of the entry doors. If you have pets or children, make sure they are confined into a room, so they don't get into any of the acid. In order for this solution to be effective, you need to leave it out for a couple of days.
Contact a Pest Control Service
If you are not able to get rid of cockroaches, or you don't feel comfortable doing so, you can get help from a pest control service, like Nature. These professionals know the feeding and breeding habits of many cockroaches, such as the oriental, smoky brown, brown-banded and American cockroach.
These pest control services have access to specialized cockroach baits that known as IGR (insect growth regulator). These baits prevent cockroaches from replacing their skin, which effectively kills them. IGR is usually a gel-like consistency, and it has a low toxicity to people. You should still make sure your pets and children don't get into it.
If you find a cockroach in your home, it's important to eradicate it as quickly as possible. Otherwise, more cockroaches could spread throughout your home. Getting rid of these pests doesn't have to be difficult when you take the steps above.
